The Riocentro transformed into a stage for pop and geek culture.
From 21 to 23 April, the Riocentro is hosting the largest event devoted to Pop culture and Gaming ever organised in Rio de Janeiro. The three-day Geek & Game Rio Festival will bring together 70,000 e-sports fans (electronic sports), video games, comics, collector items, films and TV series.
The "Gamer Stadium", a 900m2 arena dedicated to e-sport with a giant screen, professional commentators and live broadcasts, will place the public close to the action and the cyber-athletes. Fans will have the chance to enjoy contests involving the most popular games of the moment, including " Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege" from Ubisoft, a tactical shooting video game, and "Riot's League of Legends", one of the most popular online battle games in the world.
Many professional players will be attending the festival, offering fans a great opportunity to get some memorable autographs and photos. In addition, several celebrities from the computing and gaming world will be present at the festival, including Tim Schafer, the legendary video-game creator, David Lloyd the comic book illustrator and the American writer Christie Golden. These celebrities will be participating of discussion panels or holding conferences on various topics.
The festival will also be hosting Cosplay competitions during the three days. Hundreds of young fans disguised as their favourite heroes will be parading around the Festival and taking part in a major competition, which finalizes will with the Cosplay Awards.
The festival also includes many other highlights and events. For example, the "Artway" area will be devoted to independent studios, artists and publishers while youngsters and their parents can enjoy the activities available in the "Little Heroes" area.
Many workshops and conferences are also on the programme, addressing themes such as "The secrets of the 2D animation”, "Media and Pop Culture" or "Geeks and entrepreneurs".
The Geek & Game Rio Festival is designed by Fagga | GL events Exhibitions, which already organises 20 shows a year in Brazil, including the Rio Biennial Book Festival. The Festival is organised in partnership with Supernova, one of the main Brazilian e-sport companies.
